  • Best Watches and Plays of 2024

As streaming and studios waste your time with far too much pablum compared to quality watching, making sure the defend the time you have in front of the screen becomes a priority. Here’s my list of online and offline media you probably won’t hate yourself for watching.

  • Best Watches and Plays of 2023

There was not a lot of truly great stuff in 2023. I’m not sure if this is just spillover from covid when every studio and streaming service were just thumping out any content to keep people engaged, so much bilgewater made it into production, or simply the fact that a lot of material seemed highly derivative of other shows, but 2023 had a lot of things to watch, but very little quality. While there were some gems in amongst the sea glass, they felt few. Let’s hope for more quality in 2024 though, and that the writer’s strike ended up honing rather than increasing pablum.

  • Be Human Remain Human

I haven’t played any of the Deus Ex series, but hear about it all the time and have to say their new live action trailer promo for Deus Ex, ostensibly from a protest organization fighting against arbitrary human augmentation is, well… inspired. Instantly sucked me in. I imagine there is an entire online campaign around it since they have a site at Sarif Industries .

  • The Curfew: Games for Change

Haven’t played it all the way through yet, but kinda impressed with the start of The Curfew which was featured (and won Best Educational) at the Games for Change Festival . Besides the fact it represents a scarily possible England (seriously, when I lived there, there were “report on your neighbour” posters up).

The production values are high and the scenario not entirely implausible. Check it out. Let me know what you think. Too heavy handed? Too simplistic? Is it playable or did you get bored easily? Is it compelling? And, most importantly, how would you have made it better?

  • Don't Play Games with Me

Fantastic presentation and argument on the next step for true gamification experiences and how they must evolve. Insightful.

(best if you watch it full screen btw - it’s the little button in the right hand corner)

  • Limbo game artwork

So impressed with the black and white art and aesthetic on this game video. Sadly, thought it was an iPad game but is only on the XBox Live Arcade. Sad panda. Just look at it though. Really.

Anyone played it? Really need to get myself some consoles at the house to keep up on these things.

  • Isle of Tune

This is amazingly fun. Think of a musical SimCity. Isle of Tune is a music sequencer that let’s you build a virtual roadway and line it with trees, lamp posts, houses and such that produce different sounds as you pass them in the car(s).

    Isle of Tune

Phenomenal idea, though much like the person who pointed me at it, I had more fun checking out other peoples’ creations - some of which are amazing - than building my own.

  • Humans vs Zombies

Yeah, so I love games. Particularly real world ones like Werewolf , and I have to admit, I had not heard of Humans vs Zombies (HvZ) until the other night. Looks like so much fun. Defend yourself against zombie hordes with nerf guns and socks.

Here are the rules for playing at an Uni . I’m sure these could be adapted for more rapid style games amongst smaller groups.

And check out the theatrical trailer for one Uni’s upcoming game:

  • By Implication’s Wildfire

By Implication’s Wildfire recently won at the Game Design Category of the 2010 Imagine Cup. Designing a game inspired by volunteerism, they focus on the MDG goals as the basis of what you’re trying to accomplish in your city (and apparently inspired by Filipino volunteerism after the 2009 Typhoon). Sadly, Windows only (boo!), but the video of gameplay mechanics is giving me idears.

Love the mechanics of play, if hard to tell I’d like the game itself. We talked at work once about a game to teach people organizing and campaigning (part of our job helping build a more progressive Australia) and would kinda love applying these mechanics ideas to that. Hmmm…

  • EpicWinApp - Getting Things Done as RPG

OK, not sure who thought of this idea, but I absolutely love it. Personally, I use and abuse the excellent TaskPaper for my own GTD flogging (can haz iPad verzion pleaz?), but Epic Win is sheer brilliance : Your task lists as a role playing game. Brilliant.

Done right, this could unbelievably popular. WTB now. Apparently, the twitter feed for the app says it is awaiting approval in the Apple app store at the moment. Do wonder how it’ll work and sync with my desktop needs though…
