  • Housing for the Zombapolcalypse

Love this competition by architects and designers for housing solutions for surviving the Zombapocalypse. Cause let’s face it, design will probably be the thing that saves us when the undead rise (Ok, ingenuity then… or possibly the ability to outrun the shamblers… and katanas. Yeah… definitely katanas.).

Run by the visionary (and preparing early!) Architects Southwest amongst others. Inspired. Also, lurv the award names… Golden Shovel, Silver Machete etc…

  • Möbius strip library building

I’ve often bemoaned the fact that more innovative architecture seems to have fled my Canadian homeland to be replaced with boring commercial buildings maximizing rental receipts. Especially for public architecture, I wish we’d get as brave as this:

    Kazhakstan National Library

The Bjarke Injels Group (BIG) won the competition for the design of Kazakhstan’s National Library , a flowing twist of metal and glass shaped like a Möbius strip! Stellar. It’s a continuous circulation möbius Strip, as the result of 2 interlocking structures: the perfect circle and the public spiral.

  • Siyathemba: Design like you give a damn

Bit of a tardy post, but considering the time of year and the fact that we should be thinking about the less fortunate at this time of year, definitely topical…

A really fantastic and financially responsible organization, Architecture for Humanity recently announced its finalists for the Siyathemba project (dead link) whose aim is to battle AIDS in Africa with a low cost, combined sports facility and healthcare project. The finalists are linkied from the front page.
